History of Tepeköy and the Region

Tepeköy is a village in the Kaman district of Kırşehir province. The geographical location of Kırşehir has been home to many different civilizations throughout the centuries, and thus the villages in the region also bear deep traces of this historical process.

However, an important point is that Tepeköy is not an ancient settlement. The village is more of a modern settlement that emerged in recent times. This means that the historical background of the village does not date back to ancient times or early periods, but rather begins from much more recent history.

Historical Connections of Kırşehir and Kaman

Kırşehir is located in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey and has historically been influenced by many civilizations. This situation is also evident in Kaman district. Kaman is both a region with ancient settlements and rich in historical structures.

Prehistoric Period and Early Settlements

Kaman has been used as a settlement area by various peoples in prehistoric times. This region is one of the early settlement areas of Anatolia. Kaman Kalehöyük is one of the most important examples of these early settlements. Excavations carried out here have revealed traces of settlement that date back to around 3000 BC. Kalehöyük hosts numerous finds from both prehistoric and early historical periods. The excavations have proven that the Kaman region was under the influence of significant civilizations such as the Assyrians and the Hittites.

Assyrian and Hittite Periods

In the 2nd millennium BC, Kaman was part of the Assyrian Trade Colonies. In this period, the region around Kaman Kalehöyük became an important trade center under Assyrian rule. The Assyrians played an important role on the trade routes in inner Anatolia and utilized this region. At the same time, the local populations enriched themselves through local trade and cultural interactions.

The Hittite period was also an important transitional period for Kaman. The Hittites took control of the region and made Kaman an important settlement center. Numerous archaeological finds from the Hittite period reveal the historical depth of the region. During this period, Kaman became valuable both militarily and economically.

Hellenistic Period and Roman Empire

During the Hellenistic period, Kaman came under the influence of the Seleucid Empire after the conquests of Alexander the Great. During this period, the region continued to be an important cultural and economic center. Kaman continued to be located on ancient trade routes, and as a result, it was influenced by many different civilizations.

Under the Roman Empire, the Kaman region became one of the important settlements in Anatolia. The Roman period was a significant development process for Kaman both culturally and socially. The region of Kaman was particularly known for its fertile lands, which made it an important agricultural center. Artifacts from the Roman period allow us to still observe significant settlement traces and the influence of ancient civilizations.

Byzantine Period and Seljuk Rule

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Kaman came under the control of the Byzantine Empire. During the Byzantine period, small settlements and villages were established around Kaman. However, the Byzantine period was marked by limited development, with mostly temporary settlements being created. There were no major constructions or significant developments in Kaman during this time.

With the arrival of the Turks in Anatolia, Kaman came under the rule of the Seljuks. After the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, the Seljuks began conquering Anatolia, and Kaman was part of these conquests. During the Seljuk period, the Kaman region was reshaped, and significant architectural and cultural developments took place. Kaman and its surrounding areas became strategically important due to their location on key trade and military routes. Many mosques, caravanserais, and bridges were built during this time. The traces of Seljuk architecture can still be observed in many buildings in Kaman today.

Ottoman Period

The Ottoman Empire period was another important phase of development for Kaman. After the Ottoman conquest, Kaman became part of the Ottoman lands and developed into a significant settlement. During the Ottoman period, Kaman became a major agricultural production center. The region’s population mainly sustained itself through farming and livestock. The Ottoman Empire managed Kaman with great interest and established various social, cultural, and economic structures in the area. Kaman developed both in terms of trade and agriculture.

Throughout the Ottoman period, many changes occurred in the daily life of the local population, and traditional village structures and social order were reshaped. During this time, Kaman also became richer in religious terms, with the construction of many mosques, tombs, and other religious buildings.

Republic Period and Modern Times

With the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, Kaman began to develop as part of the modern state. During the Republic period, Kaman’s infrastructure started to modernize, and significant advances were made in education and health. Kaman gained the status of a municipality in 1924 and became a district in 1944.

After the 1950s, migration from Kaman’s villages to large cities and Europe began, changing the local population structure. However, agriculture and livestock farming continued to be among the most important sources of income for Kaman.

Archaeological and Cultural Heritage

Kaman gained historical significance particularly due to the excavations at Kaman Kalehöyük. This mound hosts settlement traces dating back to 3000 BC and is considered one of the oldest settlement areas in the region. Kaman Kalehöyük contains numerous remains from the Assyrian, Hittite, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods.

Today, the Kaman region stands out for its historical and cultural heritage. Archaeological excavations have shed light on many unknown aspects of the region’s past, holding great historical value. Additionally, the modern structures in Kaman have merged with traditional village life, resulting in a unique lifestyle in the region.
